Let’s Get Social

The Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma, Toronto originally known as the Kiwanis Club of West Toronto, earned its name having saved the abandoned Casa Loma in 1936 and turned it into a heritage tourist attraction through 75 years of careful stewardship. The Club used its management fees to fund an extensive program of community services. In 2013, the Liberty Entertainment Group gained operation of this estate, and established a very supportive working relationship with the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma, Toronto. Our service projects are guided by the Kiwanis International motto, "Serving the children of the world". The Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma, Toronto donates to and volunteers at the Children's Peace Theatre, the Daily Bread Food Drive and the Staples Back to School Program. The Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma, Toronto initiated the growth of Key Clubs in Toronto high schools. In our Service Leadership Program, we mentor 4 Key Clubs in high schools to volunteer in their communities and to learn, โ€œto serve is to lead", at Key Leader weekends. Ten Key Club scholarship recipients are honoured at our scholarship lunch at Casa Loma. Overall, we sponsor 21 leadership and music scholarships and awards. One of our longstanding partnerships has been with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health providing outings for the patients and their caregivers. To further heighten mental health awareness, we are sponsoring the Lovely Spring Run to fundraise for CAMH. Since the Club's chartering on July 26, 1921, the membership has undergone many changes. However, what remains constant is the respect, fellowship and generous spirit of our members. If you are interested in making a difference in the lives of others, please contact us.

Happy Monday!

Hope this letter from a KCCL Award recipient at the 2020 Kiwanis Music Festival brings joy to your day.

Congratulations, Grace! We are so excited to hear about your musical career. We hope you continue to pursue your passion in music.

Keep reading for the full letter.

Dear Mr. Drew,

My name is Grace Lau. Thank you very much for giving me the Kiwanis Club of Casa
Loma Award at the 2020 Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival. I am very honoured.

This is the fifth year I have participated in this festival. I played in three solo Grade 10 violin pieces. I like participating in this festival because it gives me good performance opportunities and I got valuable comments from the adjudicators.

I study the violin at the RCM Taylor Academy. This program is very fun. Besides private lessons, I also play a chamber ensemble, orchestra, and attend masterclasses. There is also musicianship, music theory and music history to learn. This past summer, I went to Ottawa for two weeks to attend the Young Artist Program at the National Arts Centre. It is headed by the word renowned violinist Pinchas Zukerman.

I also attended another program in Indiana for four weeks to attend the Summer String Academy run by the Jacobs School of Music in Indiana University. I learned so much from the masterclasses, concerts, chamber coachings and rehearsals at these music programs. I am thankful to my Academy violin teacher Ms. Kelly Parkins-Lindstrom for recommending and preparing me to audition for these great programs.

Outside of music, I enjoy baking, reading, and running.

Thank you for giving me this award. I will put these funds to good use towards my music studies.

Grace Lau

Continuing to share thank you mails from the KCCL Award recipients at the Kiwanis Music Festival 2020. ๐ŸŽถ

Full letter below:

Dear Mr David Drew:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generousity in funding the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma Award.

I play a non-western stringed instrument called the Erhu and I have completed my level 8 exam. I am currently preparing for my level 9 exam. I am also a grade 11 student with many hobbies including music.

Other than playing for exams and The Toronto Kiwanis Festival, I also perform as a volunteer at Kennedy Lodge and Heritage retirement home. I find enjoyment in sharing my music with others and bringing them joy.

Receiving this scholarship motivates me to move forward and to be persistant with my music. I look forward to participating in next year's Kiwanis Festival.

Sincerely,
Angelina Hernandez Liu

#didyouknow that The Art of Silk Screening program that KCCL supports was founded by Nishtha, now a KCCL member, while she was in high school? This photo is from ๐Ÿ˜ท pre-COVID ๐Ÿ˜ท when she represented KCCL to present a cheque from KCCL to program lead Jovie. Talk about leaving a legacy!

The program provides opportunities for newcomer youth to express their creativity while developing entrepreneurial skills. What started in a small closet space turned makeshift silkscreening lab at the youth space is now a program on wheels, enabling youth from different parts of the city to participate in the program!
